Surpanakha, who is depicted in a state of dark inertia, is the demon sister of Ravana. Because of her unclear thinking, she lusts for Rama and tries to desperately gain his love. She is described as generally ugly, with crossed eyes and thinning hair. Lakshmana mutilates her to try to end her reign of terror, resulting in a chain of events that dramatically change the entire story. Surpanakha immediately tells Ravana about Sita, using her words to craft a picture of a beautiful woman. Ravana falls in love with the image and agrees to help avenge Surpanakha. This results in the kidnapping of Sita.
